【Marriage Practices during the Edo period】
During the Edo period, there was a persistent belief that a marriage was between two families, and when it came to choosing the right future partner, emphasis was on judging if the other family was appropriate. Parents' wishes were considered more important than those of the children marrying, and the in-between person, called nakoudo, played a central role.
