“Didn’t you say you are trying to lose some weight? Well, I don’t mind.”

Straw Hats

Typical rain gear in the Edo period were the straw hat and the umbrella. Though the straw hat, which can be tied to the head with a string, allows the wearer to use both hands for work, it had the disadvantage of messing up the hair. As women's hair styles got more complex, they preferred umbrellas except during work and travel.
