In japan the practice of smoking tabaco is considered to have started in the Keicho era (1596-1615). They had a tray called a "tobacco tray" where they put smoking pipes, tobacco cases, fire cases and ashtrays. Although the tray changed into different shapes, it was called the "tobacco tray" because of the original flat shape.
